Artists' Statement
We share a belief in the common humanity of people throughout the world. We find that in diversity there is strength and dignity and beauty. We embrace opportunities to experience different cultures and geographies, both near and far. We reject the notion that an ‘other’ is inherently bad or to be feared. There is much to learn and appreciate in this great wide world.
Consequently we chose to live – and raise our children – in some pretty diverse and far-flung corners of the globe. Those experiences have shaped our lives, we believe for the better. We invite you to come with us on this journey, through our photographs and words . . .
We love the discovery of new places, tastes, smells, and experiences. And making connections, whether across an ocean or around the corner. Opening up our senses and trying to understand and connect in some small way with a place and its people, and the moment. Celebrating the humanity and beauty that exists both near and far.
And we share a passion for visual storytelling.
It’s about looking for the surprising and interesting in what’s all around us. Using a camera lens and words to try to capture a bit of that beauty and truth. And bring back a small piece of what that ‘other’ was like to be cherished, and shared with others.

Artists' Bio

We are a husband and wife team, from both California's San Francisco Bay Area and above the Arctic Circle in far northern Norway. We somehow found each other and have made a life together on four continents. It’s been interesting. We’re both scientists but also have a passion for photography and visual storytelling. We love experiencing diverse places and making connections wherever we happen to be. There is much to learn from different cultures, perspectives, and geographies. The sights, sounds, tastes and smells can be intoxicating . . . and sometimes not, but the ups and downs that accompany any journey are part of what make it all worthwhile. Whether it’s to a destination that is new to us or we’re revisiting a well-known and much-loved spot.
Recently we lived several years in New Delhi, India, and used that as a base to explore further afield across South and Southeast Asia. We embraced our time there; it’s a diverse region with a rich history. We traveled when we could but never tired of exploring Delhi itself. Many a weekend morning would find us in the city's old quarter – Old Delhi – wandering the labyrinthine streets at dawn with cameras as the city woke up.
Our journey continues. After living in Europe, North America, West Africa and South Asia, we have now settled in Portland on the west coast of the US. The city has great charm and we love the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
We enjoy trying to capture some small measure of our experiences through writing and our camera lenses. Collected here are a few photographs and stories from parts of that journey. Stay tuned; we continue to travel near and far. We hope you enjoy both Words and Images from our ongoing journey.
